Cardiopulmonary dirofilariosis is a severe parasitic disease caused by the nematode Dirofilaria immitis. It is a cosmopolitan disease, widely found in in tropical and subtropical areas. The pathogenesis of this disease is caused by the presence of the adult parasites in the pulmonary arteries and right ventricle of the host, causing pulmonary proliferative endarteritis and pulmonary hypertension which, if not treated, chronically leads to right-sided congestive heart failure. In the early stages, no apparent echocardiographic changes are observed; however, the generation of endarteritis, which afterwards will produce pulmonary hypertension, starts from the beginning of the infection.
