La "imagen de la vida (que) es la novela"

Abstract

Pérez Galdós concibe y construye su universo artístico en la mejor línea de la vieja estética que en el siglo XIX dominó con el nombre de realismo, desde un doble juego comprometido entre la literatura y la realidad social. La construcción de esa cosmogonía literaria a lo largo de casi cincuenta años - decisivos para la historia de España- ha de ir derivando en relación armónica con la realidad que la sostiene y con la actitud del autor ante ella: de ahí la acomodación progresiva de los temas y de las estructuras literarias que les confieren validez artística. Pero imperturbable permanece en Pérez Galdós su doble compromiso con la realidad de su tiempo y con el arte de la literatura.

Pérez Galdós constructs and molds his artistic universe according to the principies of realism, that stream of aesthetics dominating in the nineteenth century, from a perspective which combined at the same time literature and social reality. The building of that literary cosmogony in a span of time of nearly fifty years –undoubtedly decisive for the history of Spain—has to derive in a harmonic relationship not only with the reality to which it is entangled but aleo with the author´s behaviour towards it1: from there we could find the progressive accommodation of the topics and of the literary structures that give them artistic validity. But in Pérez Galdós a double compromise stands imperturbable. On the one hand a compromise with the reality of his time and, on the other, a compromise with the art of literature.
